PMI announces new PDU Category Structure

Couple a months ago I posted the ABC of PDUs in response to a lot of questions from other fellow PMI credential holders on how to get PDUs to maintain their credential status. As the recommendations included in the post may be still valid the categories to report PDUs had been updated.

Last week the Project Management Institute (PMI) published the new PDU Category Structure that will be effective on March 1st, 2011. The main purpose of this change is to simplify the Professional Development Units (PDUs) category structure.

The change came as a result of PMI members’ feedback to make the structure less complex and appropriately report PDUs. The new structure will reduce the number of PDU categories from 18 to 6. The new six categories will be grouped in two divisions: Education and Giving back to the Profession.

Credential holders will have limits in the Giving Back to the Profession division in order to balance the PDU credits and to ensure that project management continuing education will contribute to maintain their credential.

All categories use the rule 1 hour of learning = 1 PDU.

Although there is a change in the PDU Category Structure, the three-year renewal cycle and number of PDUs required to maintain the credential(s) will remain the same.

My passion is program and project management and how culture impacts the project outcome. I'd been managing global and regional projects around the world led and managed diverse and disperse teams and transformed programs into benefits.
I had been exposed to several project management methodologies and achieved credentials from different project management organizations. I am the first Mexican to achieve the PgMP credential and mentoring potential candidates from Latin America.
As an avid volunteer with PMI and with other organizations I participate in events that promote the project management culture. I have a strong multi-cultural background and speak fluently English, Spanish and Portuguese.
I am a frequent speaker at regional and global project management congresses. You can read my columns in PMI Community Post and INyES Latino.
