The project management profession has evolved in the last ten years and companies around the world are adopting a more strategic approach to project management.
The traditional approach focused on budget, schedule and scope as the metrics to measure project success. The new approach aligns projects to company’s goals and measure project success on the project’s realization of benefits.
Adopting the strategic approach to project management will require that the project management professionals (project managers, project portfolio managers, program managers) become more strategic and business oriented to evolve and expand their current roles.
As a project management practitioner in an organization that successfully adopted the new approach to project management my contribution in 2010 to the profession can be summarized as follows:
Defined the SMART PMs Concept. The project management professional of the new decade will play a more business oriented role and will be Strategic, Mindful, Adaptable, Resilient and Transparent.
Created New Project Management Knowledge. Project management professionals with vast experience should share their experiences to enrich the profession. Blogging, articles or presentations are great way to share experiences.
Balanced Personal and Professional Life. Project schedules are tight and may bring a lot of stress but project management professionals must find the time to take a break for professional development and time-off. A fresh project management professional will be a better performer.
In the first year of the new decade, I am ready to strive towards excellence, continue learning from project team and stakeholders and be a real business partner to produce results and benefits that will contribute to the success of the organization and will enrich the project management profession.
What are your plans for 2011?
